Graeme Thomson & Silvia Maglioni
Common Biography
Graeme Thomson & Silvia Maglioni are filmmakers and artists whose work explores the porous borders between fiction and documentary, cinema and installation, music and noise, the visible and the invisible. Their practice includes the creation of films, mixed-media installations, sound works, performances, radio shows, vernacular technologies and books. The artists often make use of cinema to reactivate lost or forgotten archives and histories and to create new modes of collective vision and re-enchantment. In constant dialogue with literature, philosophy, music and science, their work is research-based, process-oriented and trans-disciplinary.
Their films include Wolkengestalt (2007), Facs of Life (2009), In Search of UIQ (2013), Disappear One (2015), Underwritten by Shadows Still (2017), Common Birds (2019) and Late Gestures (2022). They have been screened at major international festivals (recently Berlin, Rotterdam, Bafici, Jihlava, Thessaloniki, FID-Marseille, Hors-Pistes, Doc’s Kingdom, Il Vento del Cinema, Lucca Film Festival, FIFVC-Beirut, Anthology Film Archives, Rencontres Paris/Berlin, European Media Art Festival, Eye Film Museum).
Their work has been presented and exhibited in museums and art spaces worldwide (including Centre Pompidou, Tate Britain, Reina Sofa, HKW, Serralves, MACBA, Le Louvre, REDCAT, Ludwig Museum, The Showroom, KHOJ New Delhi, Museu de Arte Moderna de Bahia, IMA Brisbane, SESC Sao Paulo, Whitechapel, G5A Mumbai, Van Abbe Museum, MUCEM, Fondazione Merz, Zac Centrale).
In 2020, they co-founded firefly frequencies, which is now part of the Lumbung Radio network (document fifteen). They are currently based between Paris and Palermo.
